Rivals

How does one make the step from rival to arch rival? Also, after a Google search, it remains unclear whether it is one word or two.

    I believe arch rival is your main rival, whereas you can have multiple "rivals."

    Example: KU and K-State are rivals, but KU and MU are arch rivals. KSU does not have an arch rival because they suck so much.

    Ben and I were thinking that one or more of the rivals have to be evil for it to become and arch rivalry.
